It has been said that whoever sings, prays twice, and St. Simon’s is a community that loves to worship through song. Music binds and deepens our relationships with one another, and gives words and sound to our faith in the love of the Holy One who created us.
Instruments are also part of the regular mix at St. Simon’s; it is common for our hymns to be accompanied by violin and marimba in addition to the organ or piano. Guest instrumental and vocal soloists are always welcome! Email Carl Raezer, our Associate for Music & Youth, if you are interested in sharing in the rich musical life at St. Simon’s. All are welcome!
Our Senior Choir sings at the 10:00 am service on all but the last Sunday of every month from the Sunday after Labor Day, through Pentecost. We rehearse as a full choir one Wednesday evening a month from 7:15 – 8:30 pm, and from 8:30 – 9:30 am on the Sunday mornings that we are singing. The mission of the choir goes much deeper than providing a special musical selection most Sundays; it is really about providing leadership for the whole liturgy. Whether it’s helping to teach service music for a new season, or leading our favorite hymns in four-part harmony, the choir is active throughout the whole service in supporting the community’s prayer in song.
Our 1981 Austin Organs, Inc, Opus 2654 features two manuals and 31 ranks. Our piano is a Yamaha C3 6’1” grand and our marimba is a 5-octave Dynasty.
Our Handbell choir rehearses Wednesday evenings in the sanctuary from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm and plays Sunday mornings every eight weeks. All you need to join is to be able to lift a bell (don’t worry, they come in all sorts of sizes) and count to four (or sometimes six)! Bell Choir rehearsals are from Labor Day through Pentecost.
